TU-CS 2023 Annual Alumni Day

This year the event will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm CT in the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Sciences Auditorium in Tuskegee, Alabama. The 2023 Annual Alumni Day is an event being hosted by the Computer Science Department and the Student Chapter of TU’s ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) Organization (Jazmyn Jenkins - President).

The CS department would also love for CS alumni to join the 2023 Alumni Panel Discussion in order to provide current students insight into alumni’s journeys, lessons learned, and experiences in navigating through this rewarding profession.  If you are not attending in person, you can also be sent a link to join the event virtually.  Please contact Dr. Cassandra Thomas (cthomas@tuskegee.edu) to receive this Zoom meeting information.

And finally, please send Dr. Thomas your picture (TU days or current) so it can be added to the Alumni Bulletin Board. Please share this information with other CS Alumni so that they may be included.

Virtual Computer Science Alumni Panel held 4/8/2019!

Finding ways for alumni to connect with the current Tuskegee University Computer Science students. We had 3 panel members (all alumni) participate and it was great.

Alumni top row left to right: Jabriel Jones (c/o 2014), Sharnelle Harvey (c/o 2003). Bottom row: DeWayne Walker (c/o 2008). ACM student asking question.

At 5pm Central, on 4/8/2019, we held our first TU CS Alumni panel via Zoom. The audio/video feed was pretty good. The session was held in one of the labs in the Business and Information Science building and was projected onto the white board in the lab. The panel introduced themselves for about 5-10 minutes and then we opened the floor the questions. I can’t remember if the panel was still on Zoom, but at the end the students applauded. It was a positive session encouraging students to stay focused and keep learning.

The 2018-2019 school year is coming to an end. But we are looking forward to hosting more events for the 2019-2020 school year. In addition to sessions like this and maybe one (1) panel sessions; we’ll also be looking to host mini workshop/learning sessions. Some topics to consider are:

  • How to interview

  • Speak up, can't wait for answers/ how to collaborate

  • The importance of discrete math

  • Understanding finance, understanding 401Ks

  • Document what you know

  • Build your brand, understand your value

  • To understand a problem and solution, language doesn't matter

  • IoT / machine learning

  • How the Internet works (languages used at those different levels)

  • Agile/scrum

  • User design and research

  • Frameworks

If you are interested in leading one of these topic sessions, please reach out to us.

Special thanks to our panel members: Jabriel Jones (c/o 2014), Sharnelle Harvey (c/o 2003), and DeWayne Walker (c/o 2008) for their participation and making this a success.
